FAQs About Mental Health IOP

What is an IOP for mental health?

Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP) is a type of structured care that combines evidence-based therapy, medication (if needed), and other holistic activities. An IOP does not require you to stay overnight at a treatment facility. Instead, you attend sessions during the day and return home afterward.

An IOP is suited to people who are transitioning from care in a residential program, or people who are stable enough to live at home but still require more than weekly therapy.

At Colorado Mental Health Services our IOP runs for 12 weeks, 3 days a week and for 3 hours a day. The program includes 3 group sessions, 2 individual therapy sessions, medication management, and weekly psychiatric services. In some cases, the program can be extended to 20 weeks.

An IOP delivers quality care for mental health disorders while also allowing you to build greater independence as you live at home. You can also integrate skills you develop from treatment into the real world in real time. Additionally, the flexibility of an IOP means you can enjoy continued support from your personal networks; research shows that social support can improve motivation and treatment outcomes.

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) are both effective for mental health. They are types of treatment on the continuum of care: PHP sits above IOP and below residential care. Both PHP and IOP don’t require you to stay overnight at a care facility. PHP, however, has more hours of treatment than IOP.

Which program you choose depends on where you are in your recovery journey. People who need more supervision may choose a PHP. People with greater stability may be ready for an IOP. Speak with your treatment team to determine which tier best suits you.
