The program includes:

  • 3 group sessions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is considered intensive outpatient treatment for mental health?

Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP) is a care program that combines therapy, medication (if needed), and other clinical and holistic activities. IOPs do not require people to stay in treatment facilities overnight; instead, people attend sessions during the day and return home afterward. IOPs can be offered for mental health services.

At Colorado Mental Health Services, our IOP runs for 12 weeks, 3 days a week and for 3 hours a day. The program includes 3 group sessions, 2 individual therapy sessions, medication management, and weekly psychiatric services. In some cases, the program can be extended to 20 weeks.

IOP can be an effective middle ground for people who are transitioning from residential care or for people who need to step up from traditional therapy. IOP is also a popular choice for people seeking support but who have responsibilities such as children and work and can’t commit to a residential program.

For people who are struggling with mental health, IOP is a good treatment option.

Choosing a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) depends on your mental health history, current needs and challenges, and goals.

PHP provides intensive care and is well-suited to people with acute mental health difficulties. IOP is appropriate for people who are stable but want structured support.

Yes, research repeatedly highlights the benefits of mental health services. Therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) are backed by evidence, meaning multiple studies have been conducted to prove their effectiveness for improving mental health.

No, an IOP is not hospitalization. IOPs generally take place in treatment facilities and allow participants to return home after sessions.

Attendants in IOPs will have access to supervised therapy, medication, and monitoring; however, these are all conducted with the person’s approval. IOPs are not a form of involuntary commitment.
