What's the difference between a panic attack and panic disorder?

Anyone can have a panic attack, often during a stressful stretch. Panic disorder means the attacks keep coming back, and fear of the next one starts shaping where you go and what you do. That second part, the dread and the avoidance, is usually where treatment starts.

See how our IOP works
Can IOP help if I'm having panic attacks every day?

Yes. Daily panic is often a sign that one hour of therapy a week isn't enough support. A panic disorder IOP gives you about ten hours a week, with coping skills practised in group, your own therapist and psychiatry in the same program, so the work keeps pace with what is happening.

Is panic disorder the same as anxiety?

Panic disorder is one type of anxiety disorder, built around the attacks themselves and the fear of having another. If your worry is broad and constant rather than arriving in waves, our anxiety page is the better starting point. The free pre-assessment helps you work out which picture fits.

Why do I feel unreal during a panic attack?

Feeling detached from yourself or your surroundings, sometimes called derealization, is a common panic symptom. It is frightening, and it is a recognised part of panic rather than something separate going wrong. It's something we can work on directly, in group and in your individual sessions.

Do I need a diagnosis to start?

You can start without one. The first step is a free pre-assessment, where a clinician talks with you about what has been happening. If you already have a diagnosis, we take a fresh look at it, because panic can overlap with broader anxiety and with other conditions.

Will I have to change my medication?

You keep your existing prescriptions, and nothing changes without a conversation with you first. Our prescriber coordinates with the doctor or psychiatrist you already see rather than working around them, and can see what therapy is showing week to week when a change is worth discussing.

Is panic disorder treatment covered by insurance?

We accept Colorado Access, Cigna, Anthem, BCBS PPO, UnitedHealthcare, Optum, Tricare West and Kaiser Medicaid. Medicare isn't one of the plans we can accept; if that's your coverage, admissions can talk through other options with you. Admissions runs the benefits check for you.

What happens at the free pre-assessment?

A clinician talks through what has been going on, how long it has lasted and what you have already tried, then says honestly whether this is the right level of care. If another level of care would serve you better, they help you find it. It's free, and there is no obligation to start.
